Obesity is a disease in which excess body fat has accumulated
to such an extent that health may be negatively affected. It is commonly defined
as a body mass index (weight divided by height squared) of 30 kg/m2 or higher.
This distinguishes it from being overweight as defined by a BMI of between
25-29.9. Many studies show an association between excessive body weight and
various diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus type
2, sleep apnea, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.[2][3] As a result,
obesity has been found to reduce life expectancy. With rates of obesity
increasing among both adults and children, authorities view it as a serious
public health problem. Attempts to address it include population-wide measures
to improve dietary choices and increase physical exercise.
Anti-obesity drugs or weight lose drugs refer to all
pharmacological agents that reduce or control weight. These drugs alter one of
the fundamental processes of the human body, weight regulation, by either
altering appetite or metabolism. It is recommended because of potential side
effects that they only be prescribed for obesity whre it is hoped that they
benefits of the treatment outweigh its risks.
A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials by the international Cochrane Collaboration concluded that in diabetic patients found:
“Fluoxetine, orlistat, and sibutramine can achieve statistically significantweight loss over 12 to 57 weeks. The magnitude of weight loss is modest,however, and the long-term health benefits remain unclear. The safety ofsibutramine is uncertain. There is a paucity of data on other drugs for weightloss or control in persons with type 2 diabetes.”
